University of Pittsburgh is one of the oldest educational institutions in the nation. A member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), the university offers a wide range of programs and services leading to certificate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees.The history of the university dates to 1787, when the Pittsburgh Academy was founded in a log cabin near the confluence of Pittsburgh's three rivers. It changed its name to the Western University of Pennsylvania in 1819 and then to the University of Pittsburgh in 1908. In 1966, the university became state-related.Located west of Schenley Park in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, the main campus is spread across 132 acres and is regarded as Pittsburgh’s cultural and medical center. The university also has regional campuses in Bradford, Greensburg, Johnstown, and Titusville.The university’s academic units, among others, are the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business Administration, Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business, School of Dental Medicine, School of Education, School of Engineering, College of General Studies, School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, University Honors College, and School of Social Work.Further, the University Center for International Studies (UCIS), founded in 1968, serves as the framework for the university’s multidisciplinary international programs.The University Library System (ULS) consists of 13 libraries that provide a wealth of information and services to the students, faculty, and researchers of the university. ULS is a member of the Association of Research Libraries, Oakland Library Consortium, Center for Research Libraries, and the Pennsylvania Academic Library Consortium, Inc.
